President Obama announces nominations of Rep. Melvin Watt, left, as Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) and Tom Wheeler, right, as Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), on May 1, 2013. White House Tom Wheeler was sworn in as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission this week after being nominated by President Obama and unanimously approved by the US Senate. Wheeler’s background as a former top lobbyist for the cable and wireless industries gave consumer advocates cause for concern. But his first actions as chairman aren’t what you’d expect from someone ready to roll over for Comcast and AT&T (even though those companies enthusiastically greeted Wheeler’s nomination). Wheeler on Tuesday appointed ten new staff members, including at least one that telecom companies definitely wouldn’t have chosen. That would be Gigi Sohn, incoming Special Counsel for External Affairs, who was president of consumer advocacy group Public Knowledge. 0
