Katie Harbath The Federal Election Commission (FEC), which sets rules for (you guessed it) federal-level elections in the United States, did not approve a proposal that would have allowed bitcoin-based donations to campaigns.

According to an FEC spokesperson who was not authorized to speak on the record, the Thursday vote resulted in a 3-3 deadlock—an approval would have taken four votes. Michael Gruccio of DB Capitol Strategies, the firm that filed the proposal on behalf of the Conservative Action Fund, wrote last month on his firm’s blog:
