Overview

Link aggregation is a method of using two Ethernet ports in parallel to provide trunking and network fault tolerance. Link aggregation with trunking feature enhances connection speed beyond the limits of any one single cable or port.

The improved transmission performance is best observed in environments where multiple-client connections are present.

The redundancy also creates higher link availability and avoids possible disruption occurrences.

This article will guide you through the basics of setting up Link Aggregation on a 2-LAN Synology NAS server.

Before you start

This article assumes that you have met the following criteria:

  • You have a 2-LAN Synology NAS server.
  • You have a switch that complies with 802.3ad Dynamic Link Aggregation standard.
  • You have 2 internet cables ready for use.

Setting up Link Aggregation

To set up Link Aggregation for the first time:

  • Log into Synology DiskStation Manager as admin or an account in the administrators group.
  • Go to Main Menu > Control Panel > Network.

Note:
● IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic Link Aggregation: IEEE 802.3ad is the standard for most Link Aggregation implementations.

A switch with 802.3ad support is required to use in this mode.
● Network Fault Tolerance only: If the LAN 1 port becomes unavailable, the system will use LAN 2 to provide service. You can select this option if your switch does not support IEEE 802.3ad.

  • Select the interfaces to create Link Aggregation. Click Next to continue.

Removing Link Aggregation

To remove Link Aggregation:

  • Go to Main Menu > Control Panel > Network.
  • In Network Interface tab, click Bond 1.
  • Click on Remove button.
