Get ready to embark on an epic journey to Pandora, travelers. Lionsgate announced on Friday that it’s working on a movie based on the beloved Borderlands sci-fi first-person shooter video game series from Gearbox Software and Take-Two Interactive Software’s 2K label.
The film will be produced by Marvel Studios founder Avi Arad and his son Ari, and will be a so-called tent-pole picture for Lionsgate Studios. Tent-pole status means Lionsgate is expecting the Borderlands film to be a major financial success, with likely follow-up films and heavy marketing and merchandising pushes when the movie eventually launches.
Avi and Ari Arad are responsible for some of the great movies to come out of Marvel Studios, including “Iron Man,” “Spider Man,” “The Amazing Spider Man,” “X-Men,” “Ghost Rider” and “Blade.”
Lionsgate announced that the movie will stay true to the spirit of the games, though no additional information was revealed. “The Borderlands games don’t pull any punches,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger said in a statement, “and we’ll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.”

We can only hope that means the movie will feature copious amounts of Claptrap, the eccentric, smart-aleck robot who dubstepped and danced his way into our hearts in the Borderlands video games, especially in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. You can check out some of Claptrap’s sick moves in the video below.
No further information on the film’s plot or release schedule was revealed at this time, so it will likely be a few years before we see our travelers journeying back to the mysterious planet of Pandora. But if Lionsgate’s work on “The Hunger Games” series is any indication of how good a “Borderlands” movie will be, it will almost certainly be worth the wait.
