A University of Kentucky law student was charged with wanton endangerment after a drone the authorities said he was flying crashed into the campus’ crowded stadium ahead of the school’s season-opening American football game, campus police said Friday.
No injuries were reported. The drone, which had hovered near parachuting military skydivers, crashed on September 5 in the suite level of Commonwealth Stadium before the Kentucky Wildcats’ matchup with Louisiana-Lafayette. The student, 24-year-old Peyton Wilson of Louisville, declined comment. Wilson was cited and must soon appear in court to answer a charge that carries a penalty of up to 12 months in jail.
It’s the second time in a week that charges were levied against somebody who crashed a drone into a sports venue. A 26-year-old man was charged on September 4 for allegedly crashing a drone into an empty seating area during a match of the US Open in New York.
