While the specs may blow out a camera’s exposure, the wearer’s vision remains unaffected.
A new Kickstarter campaign answers the age-old question: How do I flaunt my hipster style without compromising my security? Reflectacles—a lineup of light-reflecting eyewear and sunglasses—”ensure you’re noticed and anonymous at the same time.”
The glasses do not require batteries or bulbs; their reflective surface simply bounces luminescence back to its source—a vehicle headlight or flashlight, for instance. And while the specs may blow out a camera’s exposure, the wearer’s vision remains unaffected.
“Wear Reflectacles to protect your identity from the growing surveillance-state. Wear Reflectacles to be noticed on your bicycle or as a pedestrian,” the crowdfunding site said. “Now you can be conspicuous and concealed with Reflectacles.”
The first 100 supporters snagged a pair of specs for the early bird price of $85; everyone else can buy Reflectacles Original for $95. Pick from seven colors, each with its own reflective ability; from “blinded by the light” to “Tron Halloween costume: silver, neon (yellow), gold, blue, green, orange, red.
Meanwhile, those folks who are running from the law, or just want to block their face from prying eyes, should look into Reflectables Ghost. Available only in silver, the $125 option defends against visible and infrared light, often used by surveillance and body cameras.
Created by bespoke eyewear maker Scott Urban, Reflectacles are built for easy adjustments and lens changes. The glasses are as long as they are wide (140mm), and feature thick frames that stand 33mm tall and 45mm wide.
Consumers can also choose between three sunglass lenses (silver mirror, gold mirror, black) or active lenses (light blue, light yellow, clear). Or visit an optician to swap the standard lenses for your prescription.
The Kickstarter campaign is looking to raise $28,000; it has already topped $24,000 with 25 days to go. Should it hit its goal, the glasses are expected for delivery in June.
